Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

How do you fix a grumpy, rainy, woke-up-on-the-wrong-side-of-the-bed, had to work overtime, big meany grouch day?

Well….I really, really wanted to just come home after work and curl up with a big glass of wine. Instead, I forced myself to go for a run. 1. Because I needed to, and 2. because I knew if i didn’t I would feel even worse.

I went out intending for 6 miles and ended up running 8, walking 1 (at the end). Whew! I feel so much better!

After a hot shower, I indulged in a romantic, girly movie, new nail polish and wine.

These things will turn your bad day into a great day!

Slacker

So… I admit I’ve been totally slacking lately. Over the past 2 weeks I’ve been super lazy about running and about blog posting. Because I will be heading to the sunshine for a vacay in a month (and have to wear a swimsuit) I am re-committing myself to running and exercise. I will also try to be better about posting.

For now, here are some of my favorite motivational pins from Pinterest….”Pinspiration” if you will.

And this is just so true…

Where Do I Start?

“You ran 10 miles?!? You’re crazy!”

“I hate running.”

“How do you do that?”

“I could never be a runner.”

Geez, if I had a nickel for every time I heard one of those statements! I have found that since I have become a runner and have participated in more and more races, a lot of friends and family have come to me for advice. I am always happy to help and I get excited when I can give someone the push into becoming a runner. Now, I’m not saying I am¬†any kind of expert or running guru, but I try to give my best advice from my excperiences and¬†from my research. If you are interested in becoming a runner (do it! do it!) here are a few places to start:

Couch to 5K:  I have not used this program, but I have heard many great things about it. I really like the idea of starting out slowly and building up your body into running. It is never a good idea to do too much too fast because you hurt yourself that way. This program is a very detailed guide that helps you get started running. It begins with a lot of walking, building into walking and jogging, then running.

And that’s not all…this site also includes whole sections on nutrition, injury prevention, gear, and when you are truly hooked, marathon training!

Marathon Rookie: This is a sit I have used for training. I really like their training plans because they are very easy to follow. The plans are layed out in a week-by-week format and it simply tells you how many miles to run on each particular day of the week. For me this was a lot better than some of the plans that give you times and splits and heart rate and all kinds of other things to track. If it is your first race and/or your goal is to just  finish (yup, that counts as a goal!) I highly recommend this site.   The site states that before starting their marathon training plans, you have been running for 6-10 weeks and can run 30 minutes without stopping. They offer a 10-week 1/2 marathon training plan and both 16 and 26 week marathon plans. There is also a 7-10 week 10K plan and a 5 week 5K plan.

Marathon rookie offers lots of tips on nutrition, weight training, race day, stretching, and more! An added bonus is that the creators of this site promote Advocare, which is an awesome suppliment line that many pro athletes and Olympians use. I have tried many of their products and loved them.

Runner’s World: ¬†If you don’t subscribe to the magazine (or even if you do) this website is chock-full of information! They offer training plans, nutrition tips, helpful articles, product reviews, and so much more.¬†I have found many useful facts and information on this site as well as in their magazine. One downfall about some of their training plans is that you have to pay for them. They do include lots of add ons and personalization, though. If you want to be inspired to run or are lacking motivation, just check out some of their articles. Amazing!

So what are you waiting for?!?! Get off the couch! Sign up for a race! Lace up your sneaks and get out there! You can do it!!

** I should probably state that I am in no way  affiliated with any of the websites mentioned. I simply am giving my opinion.

Dork-sauce

I had a very long and stressful day at work today and a good run was just what the doctor ordered. Being cooped-up in an office all day seriously makes me crave this:

Gorgeous view!

best. running. trail. ever

Today I was extra lucky because my sister came along with me. We got in a solid 3.5 miles before this happened…

Sunny Skies, Cold Brew and A Walk Around the Block

It was a beautiful day here in the Pacific NW today. Temps in the mid-sixties and sunshine! It finally feels like Spring and I’m loving every second of it.

After work it was Happy Hour with my Sis or a medium-ish run….Can you guess which one I chose??

Happy Hour on the Patio!

When I got home the weather was still warm, so I took a short walk around the block with Miss O. (my roommate’s daughter). Here is our walk represented in pictures…

How did you celebrate Spring today?

high 5 for friday!

It’s Friday, and that means it’s time to list my five favorite things from the week! I’ll be linking up with Lauren @ From My Grey Desk Blog for this post.

1. I finished the book and saw The Hunger Games! I was not aware of the amazing-ness until I started the book, but I was instantly hooked! The movie version is equally amazing. I highly recommend it! I’m now obsessed and have already started book 2!

2. It was sunny and beautiful on Wednesday for H20 Running Club. There was only a small group, 5 of us, but it was a great time!

3. I made some super yummy vanilla cupcakes with vanilla frosting. I also experimented with adding some banana to part of the batch. Tasted yummy- didn’t look so great….will be better next time for sure!

4. Went on a nice, long walk with my awesome mama tonight. We enjoyed the beautiful sunshine!

5. Sunday is Easter….and that means brunch with family, lunch with friends and dinner with the fam again. It’s going to be a great day of celebration! (Chocolate and mimosas too!) BTW- I will be telling the following joke to every child I know over the next 3 days.

Worst/best Easter joke ever.

Happy Friday!!

Spring Training

It is officially time for “Spring Training.” No not the baseball kind, the running kind. Over the last few years it has been my goal to keep in good enough shape over the winter to still be able to run 4-6 miles on a weekend. Then, come Spring, I come out of hibernation (do you blame me? It’s cold and rainy and ickiness outside in the winter) and start my training for the Spring/Summer race season. This is the time to really start to run 3-4 (5 on a good week) days a week. I’ve been doing pretty good on keeping this schedule and though I have not signed up for my first race, it is coming up soon!

Saturdays have become my long run days, as I am usually heading out with a group of Glam Girls and it’s more motivating with everyone together. Last weekend, we all started out together then went our own ways and distances. Some ran 13, 10, 8, 6. It was a successful day for everyone. Also, it was pouring down rain so we figure that counts for at least 2 “added on” miles….right??

Today was sunny but a little cold. Hope this sunshine holds out for the weekend! I am planning on a 10-fer on Saturday.

**The only reason for the 10-miler on Saturday is because I plan to eat no less than 3 very large meals on Sunday…there also may or may not be many, many mimosas involved.

high five for friday!

Here are my 5 favorites from this week:

1.¬† It was my beautiful little sissy’s birthday! We got to go out to a super yummy family dinner to celebrate.

That's my sis on the left. Isn't she gorgeous?!?!

2. My new curling iron came in the mail. It’s a Hot Tools 1 1/4″, much bigger than my old one. Now my hair will be more on the wavy side than tight-curly side.

It looks like this. Click Here to buy one.

3. I got in 2 hilly runs this week. Running hills is not my favorite (but really, does anyone love hills??) but I know I will be thanking myself when shorts season rolls around!

4. I have a fun dinner and night out planned with awesome friends tonight! A great way to finish off the week!

5. I made some yummy cupcakes for all they guys at work…they were super delish!

Vanilla Cupcakes w/ Vanilla Buttercream. I also threw in a few leftover chocolates from sister's birthday.

I’ll be linking up with Lauren from the From My Grey Desk Blog for this H54F post!

Running in the Rain*

It is supposed to be spring, yet it continues to pour down rain like it’s the middle of winter. Last weekend there was even a little glimmer of hope when we had sunny weather and warm not freezing temps. I thought maybe, just maybe, this was the sign that we were past the nastiness and onto to brighter, warmer, springier things. But no. Mother Nature had a different idea and the weather has been icky. It rained all day today. Boo.

I was looking forward to running all day, and though it was disgusting outside I powered through and got in a pretty good 4 miles. I was a soggy mess when I got home, but nothing a hot shower and glass of wine couldn’t fix.And you know what? I’m actually really glad I got out there and got it done.

This is how I felt before leaving for my rainy run...

This is how I felt when I was done. A soggy mess, but so happy to be done!

*Embarrassing as it is, I admit I did actually sing this to myself to the tune of “Singing in the Rain.” ::Blushing::

In Lieu Of Running…

Instead of enjoying a beautiful, sunny/rainy/windy (yes all that weather happened today) run I went to the dentist for a cleaning. Good News: NO Cavities!! Bad News: I got the lecture about needing to floss more. But, I’m pretty sure everyone gets that lecture, right? {Just agree with me here}

In honor of the dentist, I found this on Pinterest, which I found quite funny…and a little true.
